Qualifying at Jerez was particulary sketchy as riders Cal Crutchlow, Valentino Rossi, and Dani Pedrosa all suffered heartstopping high-speed low sides at different corners.
Finally, MotoGP world champion Jorge Lorenzo clinches pole by just 0.247 seconds faster compared to Dani Pedrosa. Pedrosa's rookie Repsol Honda teammate Marc Marquez qualified third for an all-Spanish front grid.
A big achievement for Jorge Lorenzo, the pole win was rather special as Saturday also marked his 26th birthday.
"I knew it was [going to be] very close so I pushed a lot to make this fast lap in the first and the second [attempts]," said Lorenzo.
"Finally I got my pole and I'm so proud because it's my birthday. Let's see what happens tomorrow."
Rebounding from the painful lowside,Crutchlow managed to qualify 4th, followed by Valentino Rossi in 5th and Alvaro Bautista in 6th.
"It is not like me to have two crashes in one day," said Crutchlow. "I'm a bit battered and bruised but it won't stop me from giving it 100% in tomorrow's race."
Ducati rider Nicky Hayden places 7th while as Stefan Bradl, Ducati teammate Adrea Dovizioso, and Hector Barbera close out the front row.
