"Top Gear" presenter Jeremy Clarkson was suspended by the BBC earlier this month because of a fracas between the TV show's top man and BBC producer Oisin Tymon. Since the suspension, the remainder of "Top Gear" Season 22 has been cancelled as BBC holds an internal investigation regarding the alleged fracas.
BBC TV director Danny Cohen’s decision to suspend Jeremy Clarkson was to prove to the “Top Gear” presenter that “No one is bigger than the club.” While the statement may hold true, there are plenty of people within BBC that offer Jeremy Clarkson their full support. In fact, even British Prime Minister David Cameron expressed his support for Jeremy Clarkson, and claimed that his children would be “heartbroken” to see “Top Gear” pulled from BBC.
Now, new reports suggest that Jeremy Clarkson may return to the BBC very soon, albeit not to host “Top Gear.” Instead Clarkson is in line to be a guest host on an episode of the BBC1 satirical panel show “Have I Got News For You,” which will air April 24.
Hat Trick production company head Jimmy Mulville is in talks with the BBC regarding Jeremy Clarkson’s suspension and whether the presenter could be cleared in time for the show.
"The BBC has not told me what to do yet and it will be an interesting conversation," Mulville said.
On the recent fiasco that has gotten Clarkson suspended, Jimmy Mulville simply said that Jeremy Clarkson is a “fantastic broadcaster” and would “concentrate on that.”
Meanwhile, BBC ratings have plummeted since Jezza’s suspension and “Top Gear” has been pulled off the air. In fact, the Guardian reports that BBC has lost 4 million viewers since “Top Gear” Season 22 was cancelled. The series is the highest rated show on the BBC Two channel.
Given the viewership plunge, it looks like Clarkson is more important to BBC than Danny Cohen expected.
