Jennifer Lopez has signed on to the Chilean miner drama "The 33" that also stars Antonio Banderas.

The film will be produced by Mike Medavoy and will be based on the true story of 33 Chilean miners who were rescued after being trapped for 69 days in 2010.
This will be the first big time role J.Lo has had since her last film "Parker" opposite Jason Statham.
Martin Sheen and Rodrigo Santoro have also joined the films production, which was presented to foreign buyers Cannes Film Festival. It is reported that Good Universe is handling international sales.
Directing the film "The 33" will be Patricia Riggen (La Misma Luna). Riggen will be directing from a screenplay written by Mikko Alanne and Jose Rivera, with production scheduled to begin this fall in Chile. Recently while interviewing with Washington D.C.'s Hot 99.5 radio station J.Lo became extra excited by an unexpected phone call. We wondered if she got confirmed for 33, as the actress doesn't seem to have any other projects lined up for the moment.
On the air, J.Lo answered a call from a unidentified person and was given the good news that the actress had gotten a long-wanted movie role. The former "American Idol" judge could not contain her joy from the news and even admitted the news made her "teary."

After the call ended Lopez declined to reveal specific information on the role but said that "a lot of people wanted" the role. Lopez went on to say, "For a little actress like me, that's always a big deal."
