End-of-year rankings continue to make headlines as December goes by, with Google being the latest to release its top searches for different categories as part of its Year in Search 2023.
Three Latinos feature in the lists by name: actors Jenna Ortega and Pedro Pascal, as well as singer Shakira. Soccer superstar Lionel Messi is there as well through his historical move to Inter Miami and the MLS. Google says it collected its 2023 search results from January 1 through November 27.
Ortega ends the year as the second top search in the actors category, only behind Jeremy Renner, who, however, topped the list for a somber reason: a snow plow accident that almost killed him. The event took place on January 1, when the 14-ton vehicle ran over him.
Renner broke over 30 bones and even pleaded with his family to not let him live connected to a machine if that was his best expected outcome. He finally was able to recover and recently uploaded a video in which he can be seen exercising again.
Ortega, on her end, continues at the top of the public conversation for roles such as "Wednesday" in the eponymous Netflix show. "Is Jenna Ortega" is the top search for the year, while "Wednesday Jenna Ortega" and "Wednesday" ranked second and third, respectively. Her age and the movies she's been in close the top 5 search ranking.
Chilean actor Pedro Pascal's breakthrough year was also reflected in Google, especially because of his role as Joel Miller in hit HBO show The Last of Us, which follows Miller and her companion, Ellie Williams (played by Bella Ramsey) through a post-apocalyptic universe in which a fungi-transmitted virus turns humans into zombie-like creatures.
The series has already been renewed for a second season and is set to keep Pascal under the spotlight, especially considering his widely-acclaimed performance, which even landed him Golden Globe and Emmy nominations for Best Television Male Actor in a drama series.
Three of the five top searches related to Pascal are linked to the show, while the other two actually have to do with him being the protagonist of one of the year's top memes: they have to do with Nicolas Cage, possibly as a result of a scene from the movie "The unbearable weight of massive talent."
In it, Pascal plays an eccentric millionaire who pays his favorite actor, played by Nicolas Cage, to attend his birthday party. The scene itself shows them both in a car, with Cage looking exasperated while Pascal seems to be having the time of his life. Most videos feature them with Cass Elliot song Make Your Own Kind of Music, which is not the case in the movie.
Shakira, on her end, led searches for musicians for her song with Argentine producer Bizarrap, Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53. The diss song aimed at her now ex husband, former footballer Gerard Piqué, dominated charts and searches, featuring in all top 5 searches. In fact, Piqué was Shakira's top related search and "Shakira Piqué" was the second.
As mentioned, Lionel Messi's move to Inter Miami made the interest for the team skyrocket. The team led all sports teams searches, topping Los Angeles Lakers, Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr FC and Manchester City, as well as Miami Heat. Searches such as "Miami Vs." or "Inter Miami vs." top the searches.
