Six months after recalling 900,000 trucks, Chrysler is recalling another 468,000 as a result of gearshift malfunctions that inadvertently put its jeeps into neutral.
The company announced its recall of 2006- to 2010-model-year Jeep Commanders and 2005 to 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokees--among others-- worldwide Saturday, with vehicles being removed from showroom floors in the U.S, Canada and Mexico.
Around 295,000 are in the U.S., 28,500 and 4,200 are in Mexico, Reuters reported.
A report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration promted the mass recall that indicated that the gearshift malfunction in affected vehicles had caused 26 accidents and 2 injuries, according to the New York Times.
The severity of the injuries remains unknown. No fatalities were reported.
The company allegedly learned of the problem 16 months ago when an owner of a Grand Cherokee with the remote-start feature complained the vehicle had shifted into neutral.
Spokesman Eric Mayne did not indicate to reporters why the recall had been delayed for so long.
In addition, Chrysler is recalling 532 2013-model-year Ram 1500 pickup trucks in the U.S. and Canada to inspect and possibly replace window defrosting and defogging components. About a third of these vehicles remain in dealerships.
The Fiat affiliate will also recall 5,330 right-hand-drive 2008 to 2012 Jeep Wranglers for dust shield installation to prevent the compromising of the airbags. These trucks are mostly used for rural mail delivery.
The last major recall for the manufacturer occurred in November when 900,000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Liberty SUVs were recalled to repair a part that could potentially cause the airbag to deploy unintetionally.
