Former Governor Jeb Bush, R-Fla., has been reappearing in the headlines lately because of his statements on the immigration reform debate. Additionally, many observers believe the younger brother of George W. Bush may try to follow in his father's and brother's footsteps.
The 43rd President of the United States celebrated the grand opening of the George W. Bush Presidential Library in Dallas, Texas on Thursday; a testament to his leadership as chief executive of the United States.
Journalist Diane Sawyer asked the former president what he and his wife Laura Bush thought of the prospect of a third Bush presidency. "He doesn't need my counsel," the former president said of Jeb Bush. "He would be a marvelous candidate."
Jeb Bush's ringing endorsement by his brother was overshadowed, however, by a surprising figure: his mother. "We've had enough Bushes in the White House," said former first lady (and first mother) Barbara Bush. "It's a great country. There are a lot of great families, and it's not just four families."
Known throughout her husband's presidency as a take-no-prisoners figure that says-it-like-it-is, Barbara Bush added that her younger son is more than qualified to lead the United States as president, but that there are other qualified candidates.
"[Jeb will] get half of our friends and all of our enemies," Barbara Bush said, noting the amount of detractors her elder son still has in the media and across the country, despite his absence from public life in the last five years. Jeb's father, former President George Herbert Walker Bush, 88, has not yet reportedly indicated which side of the fence he is on in this regard.
Retweets of Barbara Bush's not unusually blunt statements flooded Twitter Thursday, and some gave their own opinions on Jeb Bush's chances of becoming the 45th president. "We need another Bush in office about as much as we need Obama to have a 3rd term," quipped real estate mogul Donald Trump (@RealDonaldTrump).
Obama's former chief advisor David Axelrod (@DavidAxelrod) said, "I don't always agree with Jeb Bush, including on his choice for President. But I admire his candor."
In a twist, the presidential prospect, Jeb Bush, is reportedly part of a group of big name GOP leaders pressing for Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis. to run in 2016, according to Steve Hayes of the Weekly Standard. Ryan was Mitt Romney's running mate in the 2012 elections and has kept a high profile in the House since the loss in November.
On the prospect of Jeb Bush running against former First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, George W. Bush remarked: "it would make a fantastic photo."
