Cory Bowman, the half-brother of Vice President JD Vance, has made headlines for his remarks about child protection during the campaign kickoff for his mayoral campaign in Cincinnati. "For anyone who inappropriately touches a child, I'll have a Glock to nuts policy," he said to cheers from the crowd listening to his remarks.
Bowman launched a MAGA-style mayoral campaign last week, drawing attention with incendiary rhetoric and controversial statements. The pastor of a West End church, Bowman expressed frustration with the city's current leadership under Democratic Mayor Aftab Pureval, as Cincinnati's The Enquirer reports. He specifically addressed the mayor's zoning laws, which he claimed were not working and were damaging communities, particularly the West End.
Bowman also highlighted public safety issues and voiced his opposition to Cincinnati's sanctuary city status, calling it an invitation for "traffickers, cartels and criminals that can't go anywhere else."
Bowman's candidacy marks a significant moment in Cincinnati's political landscape, as it introduces a Republican challenger for the mayor's office for the first time since 2009. He faces an uphill battle in a city with a historically Democratic electorate. In the 2024 election Cincinnati voters overwhelmingly rejected Trump, with Vice President Kamala Harris winning 76.2% of the vote within the city, as local WLWT News reports.
Despite this, Bowman remains optimistic. In a statement announcing his candidacy he said:
"Weeks ago, my flight touched down at CVG, returning home from the most monumental inauguration in my generation. When I landed, I knew the city where my family and I live and love cannot fall behind in the critical years ahead."
He also emphasized his desire to offer the city a choice in leadership and to foster prosperity and growth. His half-brother, Vice President JD Vance, has not yet endorsed him publicly, though Bowman indicated that this could change as the race progresses.
Cincinnati's mayoral race is now set to be a three-way contest, with Bowman competing against Brian Frank, a former military and business leader who shares similar conservative views, and the incumbent, Aftab Pureval. The race will culminate in a primary election on May 6, 2025, with the top two candidates advancing to a November showdown.
