Scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent, quarterback Jay Cutler has come to terms with the Chicago Bears, bringing an end to any speculation concerning his future. Unsure of how contract negotiations would transpire between himself and the Bears organization, Cutler knew the possibility of being slapped with the franchise tag certainly existed. After a quick resolution to his immediate NFL future however, the 30-year-old former Vanderbilt University star now knows he’ll remain in the Windy City after inking a seven-year contract with Chicago. Cutler – who missed five games this past season due to an ankle injury – has been under center in Chicago since joining the team in 2009 after spending his first three professional seasons with the Denver Broncos.

Despite the Bears missing the postseason for the sixth time in seven years, the organization is pleased to have a familiar face at the quarterback position moving forward. “We're very excited to have Jay for the long term,” Bears general manager Phil Emery said Thursday morning. “He battled through the tough times and kept fighting. We're pleased, it works for both parties. It rewards Jay and it enables us to continue to build a championship team. I see improvement in his ball security, distribution to his targets and a transformation in his demeanor as a leader.”

According to FOX Sports, Jay Cutler will be paid an average of $18 million for the first three years of his new deal. In addition to re-signing Cutler, the Bears came to terms with cornerback Tim Jennings and guard Matt Slauson, who were also set to become free agents. Moving forward, Cutler will have a strong arsenal of weapons including wide outs Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffrey while running back Matt Forte and tight end Martellus Bennett serve as strong pieces as well.

Chicago finished the 2013-2014 regular season 8-8 and dropped the regular-season finale to the Green Bay Packers. The loss to Green Bay eliminated the Bears from postseason contention, with the Packers claiming the NFC North crown.
