Mother-of-two Jacintha Saldanha was found dead in her residence after she transferred a prank call from two Australian DJs asking about the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton's pregnancy.
The duchess was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in central London with hyperemesis gravidarum - acute morning sickness.
"The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Jacintha Saldanha," a statement from a St. James's Palace spokesman said. "Their Royal Highnesses were looked after so wonderfully well at all times by everybody at King Edward VII Hospital, and their thoughts and prayers are with Jacintha Saldanha's family, friends and colleagues at this very sad time."
Saldanha's death is described as "unexplained," it is suspected that she committed suicide.
Saldanha's husband said that he is "devastated" over the loss of his wife. Her 14-year-old daughter posted on Facebook, "I miss you, I loveeee you."
No funeral arrangements have been announced, but it is believed that Saldanha will be taken back to India to be buried.
2Day Australian radio hosts Mel Greig and Michael Christian called the hospital posing as the Queen and Prince Charles.
"Just on our royal prank call... we were very surprised that our call was put through, we thought we'd be hung up on as soon as they heard our terrible accents," Christian wrote on his Twitter account. "We're very sorry if we've caused any issues and we're glad to hear that Kate is doing well."
Last week, Buckingham Palace announced that Prince William and his wife Middleton are expecting their first child.
