With the latest Apple devices just announced at the Oct. 22 media event, Apple watchers have turned their attention to what the tech company has coming next. Two major devices on everyone's minds is the iPhone 6 and the Apple iWatch. Rumors about the iWatch have begun to circulate, everything from features to a possible release date have been discussed. Now new rumors suggest that Apple is ready to name the company that will be contracted to design the display for the iWatch.
According to news.cnet.com, Apple is close to signing a deal with LG Display. Apple is said to be looking to LG to make the flexible OLED panels for the iWatch. On Tuesday, the Korea Herald cited individuals with inside knowledge of the deal as saying that Apple and LG are close to signing a deal. The insiders also report that LG is Apple's second choice display makers. It is reported that Apple's first choice is RiTDisplay, based in Taiwan. One of the unnamed sources told the KH Apple and LG have all but sealed the deal.
"LG Display has been in talks over flexible organic light-emitting diode panels for quite a while and it looks like it will be sealing the deal with Apple." Another source speaking with the Korea Herald said that Apple will be using two vendors to make their iWatch displays as a precaution. "Instead of relying on one supplier for its iWatch, which will be unveiled next year, Apple will have two vendors to be safe. They key provider will be RiTDisplay and LG Display will be second. Japan Display might also be a candidate, but so far its capacity seems lacking."
On Monday Apple held its fourth quarter earnings call in which Apple CEO Tim Cook spoke about where Apple would be going in 2014. "In terms of new product categories specifically," Cook said Monday, "If you look at the skills that Apple has from hardware, software and services, and an incredible app ecosystem, this set of things are very, very unique. I think that no one has a set of skills like this. And we obviously believe we can use our skills in building other great products in categories that represent areas where we do not participate today."
