Italian university students hung an effigy of billionaire Elon Musk upside down Tuesday in Milan's Piazzale Loreto—the infamous site where fascist dictator Benito Mussolini's body was desecrated in 1945.

The demonstration, ANSA reported, comes amid widespread outrage over Musk's appearance at President Donald Trump's inauguration on Monday, where the Tesla and SpaceX CEO made two stiff-armed salutes that many interpreted as a fascist gesture.

Musk, who has been appointed to co-lead a new government efficiency department under Trump, dismissed the backlash, saying, "Frankly they need better dirty tricks. The 'everyone is Hitler' attack is soo tired."

The student collective Cambiare Rotta (Change Course) claimed responsibility for the stunt, sharing images of the effigy—crafted from a garbage-filled sack with a print out of Musk's face affixed—dangling from a gate in the square.

"There's always room in Piazzale Loreto, Elon..." the group wrote next to the display, drawing parallels between Musk and the disgraced fascist leader.
