Once again, team Repsol Honda's combination of riding talent and hardware makes them the team to beat as lead rider Dani Pedrosa earns his 25th MotoGP pole.

Pedrosa's brilliant hot lap nearly didn't happen as grid traffic made it difficult for him to enjoy some clear air. Ever the opportunist, Pedrosa patiently waited for the final moments of Q2 as rival Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo set a Mugello record breaking lap. Remarkably, Pedrosa's 11th hour qualifying set a time of 1:47.157, just .069 quicker than Lorenzo, a master who has already won at Mugello in two consecutive races.

"It was hard at the end, because I knew my previous lap was not good. I was down on the grid and I had only one more chance. I was also disappointed because many riders wanted to follow and nobody wanted to push.

"I knew one mistake [would mean] I wouldn't improve, but I just kept calm and focussed and finally I did a good lap time, faster than last year. It's good, we have improved the bike today and I hope to do a good race tomorrow."

"I was really surprised when I made a '47.6 on the first lap. I didn't expect to be so fast but also I didn't expect Dani to be so quick on the last lap. I expected to stay on pole. But sometimes it works out that way," shrugged Lorenzo.

"The important thing is to make a good start tomorrow, to get in front and to go away if possible. If that is not possible, the race is long and we have to be consistent. We have to improve some small details, but in general the bike is better here than at the other tracks."

"We still suffer a little bit when the weather is hotter, we don't have the same grip," admitted Lorenzo. "Even with this issue we have been competitive though, in the free practice and also in the qualifying."
