One of the most popular movie franchises in recent memory, 'Iron Man' will continue the series with the release of 'Iron Man 3' on May 3rd.
Surviving an ambush from his father's old partner and Stark Company manager Obadiah Stane (Jeff Bridges) in the first 'Iron Man' flick, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) revealed himself to world as the true Iron Man heading into the second movie.
While Stark has begun to use his armor to help establish and keep world peace, the superhero meets his toughest foe in Ivan Vanko (Mickey Rourke), a Russian physicist who is out to exact revenge on Stark. Vanko and Stark's fathers were former partners but when Vanko Sr. tried to turn the technology into a personal profit, he was sent back to the Soviet Union where he would eventually pass away. Vowing revenge in the name of his father, Vanko is ultimately defeated by Stark near the end of the second film.
The anticipation level for Tony Stark fans heading into 'Iron Man 3' is perhaps as high as it's been throughout the continued success of the franchise.
With the U.S. release of the film just days away, here's a closer look at 3 Things you'll want to know about Iron Man 3.
3. 'Iron Man 3' Has a New Director
Leading the direction of 'Iron Man' and 'Iron Man 2,' director Jon Favreau will not serve as the lead man behind 'Iron Man 3.' Favreau will instead team with Kevin Feige as the film's executive producer. Shane Black takes over the directorial roles for the third edition of the series. Black is probably best-known for writing the screenplay to the hit movie 'Lethal Weapon,' released back in 1987 starring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. Even with the director change, the fact that Favreau remains on set as one of the executive producer's should indicate that the film will follow the form of the previous two, making for another great 'Iron Man' flick.
2. So Far So Good for 'Iron Man 3' across Foreign Markets
While it is expected that 'Iron Man 3' will do extremely well when it opens in U.S. theatres on Friday, May 3rd, the film is also reportedly finding instant success outside the United States. As the Times-Picayune reports, Tony Stark and company have already brought in over $195 million since opening across 42 foreign markets last weekend. In it's initial weekend release back in 2010, 'Iron Man 2' bagged over $133 million so it is clearly possible 'Iron Man 3' surpasses both the 2010 total and the recent earnings collected overseas.
1. Tony Stark and Pepper Potts are officially an item
Followers of the film series will remember the kiss that took place at the end of 'Iron Man 2' between Stark and company CEO Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow). Upon saving the life of Potts following Tony's defeat of Vanko, it was assumed by viewers that the relationship between the superhero and his former assistant-turned CEO had finally taken off. Heading into Iron Man 3, film loyalists will be happy to know that Stark and Potts are indeed a dating couple, even though Stark is sometimes known for paying more attention to his Iron Man suits then he is to his girlfriend.
Iron Man 3 will hit United States box offices on Friday, May 3rd.
With excitement levels through the roof, fans everywhere are hoping the third billing of the 'Iron Man' series lives up to the high level the first two films displayed.
