Reportedly the initial shipments of Apple's next-generation iPhone, 5S, will be in limited supply. The reason being low yield rates for the production of the sensor for the device's rumored fingerprint scanning technology reports Digitimes. That however is in addition to some chips required to power the new iPhone's 5S LCD display.

"The fingerprint recognition chip is designed by AuthenTec, of which Apple acquired for US$356 million in July 2012. Issues related to the original design of the chip reportedly caused the lower yield rates, claimed the sources, adding that Apple outsources the production of the fingerprint recognition chips to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and the packaging of the chips to Xintec."

Digitimes also reports that the new iPhone's production was going to start in June or early July but since the yield problems the production has been delayed until late July. This will result in Apple delaying shipments of three million iPhone 5S devices into the fourth quarter.

This statement however has been echoed by different sources such as Jeffries analyst Peter Misek, who indicated that "small batch production" of the new 5S device has begun last month, with production going into overdrive later this month. Also in early April KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported the same statement saying Apple would likely have a "delay" for the iPhone 5S into September and that Apple's third quarter would see smaller shipment growth than previously expected.

Reuters report in late April mirrored Kuo's report claiming that production issues would likely result in delays for Apple's iPhone 5S device.
