It has been rumored that Apple is also to discontinue the iPhone 4 and 4S in order to make way for an all-Lightning connector iPhone lineup, allowing Apple to standardize around its connection standard and phase out the older 30-pin connector standard. The only exception however would be the iPod classic, which has not been updated in a number of years.

Macrumors reports that the in-cell technology used for the iPhone 5's touchscreen is "not suitable for low-volume production," contributing to Apple's decision to stop production of the current generation iPhone and focus on producing parts for newer products. It was rumored that the iPhone 5 and 5S are expected to have nearly identical displays but leaked photos suggest that the 5S have changes to the orientation of the flex cable connectors on the display assemblies.

The 5S is reportedly to start assembly at the end of this month, with both the low-cost plastic iPhone and the iPhone 5S slated for launch in September or October.
