With the release of the iPhone 5S potentially around the corner, Wal-Mart has taken some pre-emptive measures. The store has cut its prices on the iPhone 5, iPad and iPad 2. A 16-gigabyte iPhone 5 is now down to $98 from its original Wal-Mart price of $128, which was already considerably cheaper than its $200-plus price tag elsewhere. There is a catch, however. In order to receive the deal, prospective users must sign a two-year contract with either AT&T, Sprint or Verizon. The cost of its 10-inch iPads dropped by $50, now standing at $449. The cost of the iPad 2 is down to $349. The compact version of the tablet, the iPad Mini, was one product that did not get slapped with a discount. The newest iPhone is expected to be unveiled at Apple's upcoming press event Sept. 10, though some sources say consumers may have to wait a little longer -- until Sept. 20 -- before the product is released.
It is surmised that the new phone will be available sooner rather than later as stores tend to cut prices of older models to clear out its stock in anticipation of the newer ones. Radioshack and Best Buy are following suit when it comes to discounts; RadioShack is currently offering a $50 price reduction on all its iPhones, including the iPhone 4 and 4S. Users would not have to sign a contract to take advantage of the deal. Best Buy is offering $100 off the iPhone 5, but in order to get the deal, consumers would have to trade in their old phones. This is a considerably less remarkable deal as ABC News notes because some older model iPhones may be sold for up to $300 at certain outlets provided the phone is in excellent condition.
Wal-Mart is not only cutting the price of the soon-to-be outdated iPhone 5, but the iPhone 4S as well. The phone is now going for $39, down from $89, already a fair deal considering most new iPhone 4S go for $100 with a two-year contract. Apple phones are not the only tech products getting nifty price cuts. Wal-Mart cut the price on the Samsung Galaxy S4 to $138, but $10 less than what Verizon offers and $30 less than the AT&T model. Though its iPads are getting price reductions as well, the arrivial of the new iPad is still up for speculation.
