Google released its Nexus 7 tablet in July and it is really a force to be reckoned with in the marketplace.
The Nexus 7 runs on Android's 4.1 operating system and has a 7-inch IPS, 1280X800 pixel display.
The tablet can store up to 16GB of memory and weighs 0.75 pounds.
According to Google, the Nexus 7 is "designed to go the distance." Users should expect "over 9 hours of HD video playback, 10 hours of web browsing or e-reading and up to 300 hours of stand-by time."
According to Consumer Reports Donna Tapellini, the Google Nexus 7 tablet challenges the iPad.
"With its bigger, excellent Retina display and a still-unmatched app store, the iPad still has the edge over the Nexus 7," Tapellini said. "But if you want a tablet in a smaller package for a lot less money, the Nexus 7 is worth thinking about."
While Consumer Reports has not tested the iPad mini, to date, Google Nexus 7 is "one of the best small tablets we've ever tested."
The Nexus 7 currently costs $199 for an 8GB model and $249 for a 16GB version - both versions are cheaper than Apple's lowest asking price.
Apple announced it's latest generation to the iPad family - the iPad mini - yesterday.
The iPad mini comes in two colors - black 7 slate and white & silver.
In addition to the iPad mini with Wi-Fi, Apple also introduced the device with Wi-Fi and cellular data.
According to Apple, the iPad mini "supports fast cellular networks around the world - including LTE networks." The iPad mini with cellular data will be available on at&t, Sprint, and Verizon's networks.
"When you decide to activate data service, you can choose the amount of data per month you want to buy - with no long-term contract," Apple said on its website. "So if you have a business trip or vacation approaching, just sign up for the month you'll be traveling and cancel when you get back."
The iPad mini weighs 0.68 pounds, is 7.78 inches tall and 5.3 inches wide. Like all other Apple products, the iPad mini can store up to 64GB of memory.
The iPad mini is 23 percent thinner and 53 percent lighter than the third generation iPad and features a 7.9-inch Multi-Touch display, FaceTime HD and iSight cameras, wireless performance. The iPad mini is expected to have 10 hours of battery life. It has a 1024X768 resolution and works on Apple's A5 processor.
The iPad mini costs - Wi-Fi: $329 (16GB), $429 (32GB) and $529 (64GB). Cellular: $459 (16GB), $559 (32GB), $659 (64GB).
But while Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols said he is impressed with the iPad Mini, he is keeping his Nexus 7.
"At first impression, the Nexus 7 still appears to be the better tablet and it's much cheaper," he said. "Unless you're tied to the hip to Apple products, this is a no-brainer. The Nexus 7 is the best small tablet for the money in the market today."
