A new video from the guys at Unbox Therapy explores the possibility and the highly rumored feature of a Touch ID fingerprint sensor on the next-generation iPad. In the new video posted to YouTube the speculated front panel to the fifth-generation iPad is compared to the home button with a fingerprint sensor removed from the iPhone 5s and a home button removed from a standard iPhone. The rumor of a fingerprint sensor in the next-generation iPad models have been lurking around the internet since the new feature was revealed for the iPhone 5s. Now with this new video the evidence is becoming clearer that the next iPad will indeed have the Touch ID feature. In the video the standard home button does not appear to fit inside the casing of the fifth-generation iPad, while the smaller home button with the Touch ID fingerprint sensor does fit. Of course this is not concrete evidence that the next iPad will have a fingerprint sensor but it does suggest that the fifth-generation IPad is potentially able to support the Touch ID feature. Macrumors is reporting that although this is a good indication of a Touch ID feature you shouldn't read into this video too much. Apple is expected to take design cues from the iPad mini and the iPad mini's home button is smaller than the iPhone 5 but doesn't tote the fingerprint sensor. Apple has made the home buttons in their devices smaller in the past and this time doesn't mean that the smaller home button is an indication for a new feature. But then one can argue the other side to that argument and say Apple has never had the fingerprint feature until now, so a smaller home button could indicate the next-gen iPad will see the feature. It's confusing, we know.
Other evidence has shown that the next-gen iPad devices will see the fingerprint sensor, like the assembled gold next-generation iPad mini that had a gold fingerprint sensor on the device.
Time will tell in this situation. It is rumored Apple is setting up another media event sometime at the end of October or early November to announce their new iPad modes, the fifth-generation iPad and second-generation iPad mini.
