iOS 7 Release Date Today? When To Expect Apple's New Operating System Rumored To Be Announced At Press Event

With Apple's press event only a few hours away, everyone is waiting for their day to be brightened and their iPhones be upgraded. So if rumors are true, which they are, then Apple's new operating system, iOS 7 is to be unveiled today by CEO Tim Cook during a press event at Apple's Cupertino campus. But when will iOS 7 be released?

New reports have claimed that iOS 7 could be released as early as Sept. 11 as an upgrade via download on existing Apple devices, the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, the iPod touch, iPad 4 and iPad Mini. However, the iOS 7 iPad update could see a small delay until Apple announces the iPad 5 and iPad mini 2, according to some reports. Historically, Apple has released iOS updates in between the iPhone launch date and the iPhone release date, thus the iOS 7 release date will come somewhere between Sept. 10 and the iPhone 5S's Sept. 20 release date.

Apple's announcement and release date are almost mathematical, today's press event will announce the iPhone 5S, pre-orders for the next-gen smartphone will begin on Sept. 13, with an iPhone 5S release date on September 20th. Considering these dates, and Apples past release schedule, the iOS 7 release date is most likely scheduled for September 18th, two days before the iPhone 5S release date. Apple used the same timing since the iPhone 3GS and iOS 3.

Apple will confirm their exact release date at their press event, which will either fall on Sept. 17 or Sept. 18. It would be a complete shock if the Cupertino-based company released the new operating system on the same day as they unveil new devices, but the iOS 7 will obviously come before the iPhone 5S release date. In the past four years, Apple has adhered to a very specific release schedule. iOS 3 was released two days before the iPhone 3GS release date, iOS 4 was released three days before the iPhone 4 release date. Then Apple returned to the two day span, releasing both iOS 5 and iOS 6 a mere two days before the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 release.

As for the actual upgrade, users on iOS 6 should be able to easily update their operating system to iOS 7, Apple completes their software upgrades via air updates, which allows users to update without plugging into a computer. Users will likely see an update notification at 10 a.m. PT / 1 p.m. ET on the release day.
