Instagram announced Wednesday that photos and videos can be embedded around the web. Starting today, you can share your favorite Instagram moments with the world as easily as with YouTube or other digitally forward services.
Users will be able to grab a special block of text that they can paste into a blog, article or web site and after you publish it, the content will appear on your page. However, viewers will still see the user who uploaded the photo or video.
To embed Instagram photo and videos from your account or a friend's account, view the file from the Instagram site on a desktop browser and click the share icon found below the comment bubble image. A pop-up window will appear with the embed code for sharing on a website.
The embedded image clearly shows the user's Instagram name and includes a link to the profile page. Unlike Twitter embeds offering retweets and replies, you won't be able to like or comment directly in the embedded image, rather click on to the Instagram URL to interact with a friend's photo.
"As always, you own your photos and videos, and we want to make sure that's understood no matter where your content appears," Instagram said. "Whether you want to embed your video on your blog or a friend wants to feature your photo on a website, everyone will clearly see that your content belongs to you."
The service will only be available to users with public profiles. If your content is private, there is no change. At this point, this feature is only available on the Web, meaning you can't get embed code from your phone.
Instagram, the Facebook-owned photo and video sharing service launched Web-based profiles last November. Before that, the only way to view someone's profile was through the mobile app.
The new feature follows Instagram's larger endeavor into the video realm. Last month, they added the option to capture videos lasting up to 15 seconds long. It also includes custom cover frames and stabilization to fix shaky clips.
