The sensational Infiniti Emerg-E Concept stunned the crowd when it was first unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year. By June, Infiniti had already revealed a rolling prototype in time for the prestigious Goodwood Festival of Speed hill climb event. We were sure that Infiniti would soon announce the official production of its new hybrid supercar. Unfortunately, we were wrong.
Infiniti has announced that its Emerg-E project has been cancelled. Chief of Infiniti brand Johan de Nysschen said to Autocar, "The Emerg-E is not planned for future production at all, but it does offer an insight into our future powertrains and design direction. There will be strong cues in the G-series successor, particularly in the interior."
During the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, Infiniti had mentioned the companies intent to apply many of the themes from the Emerg-E, though there was no implication on exercising the interior at the time.
While the Emerg-E interior is certainly worthy of the next generation of Infiniti vehicles, we are more interested about how much from the Emerg-E's hybrid powertrain will carry over to upcoming Infiniti vehicles. A growing niche among luxury marques, Infiniti is undoubtedly keen to join the fray as well. Sharing the architecture from a Lotus Evora 414E Hybrid, the Infiniti Emerg-E electric sports car is powered by two electric motors that drive the rear wheels as well as a three-cylinder engine that strictly acts as a range-extending generator.
