The Indianapolis Motor Speedway will be screaming this Memorial Day weekend as the 98th Indy 500 is scheduled for Sunday, May 25. Coverage on ABC will begin with prerace commentary at 11 a.m. EST. The Indianapolis 500 race will officially begin at 12:12 p.m.
Ed Carpenter earned his second Indy 500 pole for the second straight year. The back-to-back pole finisher dominated the qualifying days, average a staggering 231.067 mph over four laps on Sunday.
"I felt that it was harder," Carpenter reflected after his phenomenal result. Carpenter is only the eleventh driver to earn consecutive poles at the Indianapolis 500. "It was just a different position because when I made my run last year, we didn't really have anything to lose. This year, being the last guy to go out, I think there was a little bit of pressure to not mess it up."
Ed Carpenter will start the Indy 500 at the front of the grid, followed by James Hinchcliffe, and Will Power. Three-time Indy 500 champion Helio Castoneves, Simon Pagenaud, and Marco Andretti will make the second row.
Six former Indianapolis 500 winners will be racing again this Memorial Day weekend, including two legends that have stepped away from the event for more than a decade. Returning Indy 500 champions include last year’s winner Tony Kanaan, and teammate Scott Dixon. Team Penske driver Helio Castoneves won here more than three times and is joined by fellow Penske teammate Juan Pablo Montoya, who won the Indy 500 back in 2000. Finally, former F1 Champion and 1995 Indy 500 winner Jacques Villeneuve is returning to the Brickyard with the Sam Schmidt Motorsports team. 1996 Indy 500 winner Buddy Lazier returns as well. For the very first time in Indy 500 history, the grid includes at least one Formula 1, IndyCar, and Nascar champion.
