The Independent Spirit Awards took place last night and movie “12 Years a Slave” was a big winner taking home five awards including Best Feature, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Female and Best Cinematography. “12 Years a Slave” dominated these awards. “Dallas Buyers Club” was the only other film to win multiple awards.

Lupita Nyong’o, upcoming actress of Kenyan and Mexican citizenship won for Best Supporting female for her role in this epic film. She turned 31 yesterday, definitely winning the award was not a bad way to celebrate her birthday.

Jared Leto won Best Supporting Male and Matthew McConaughey won Best Male Lead for their roles in “Dallas Buyers Club.” Cate Blanchett won Best Female Lead for her role in “Blue Jasmine.” Blanchett and McConaughey are both favorites to win the Oscar for their roles, so are Leto and Nyong’o in their respective categories. It can be said the Spirit Awards were a preview on what to expect tonight at the Oscars.

Fruitvale Stationwon Best First Feature, “Nebraska” won Best First Screenplay, “This is Martin Bonner” won the John Cassavetes Award. “Short Term 12” won Best Editing, “20 Feet From Stardom” won Best Documentary and “Blue is the Warmest Color” won Best International Film.
