The 2013 Independent Spirit Awards nominations were announced today and Latino talent was featured prominently. Oscar Isaac was nominated for "Best Male Lead" for his performance in "Inside Llewyn Davis," Melonie Diaz was nominated for "Best Supporting Female" for her work on "Fruitvale Station" while Cuban film "Una Noche" was nominated for "Best First Film" for director Lucy Molloy. Steve McQueen's "12 Years A Slave" received the most nominations with seven nods. Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity" was not nominated as its blockbuster budget falls outside the award category.
Other significant nominees were "Nebraska," directed by Alexander Payne, which received six nominations, and JC Chandor's "All Is Lost" received four. "Inside Llewyn Davis," "Short Term 12," "Fruitvale Station" and "Blue Jasmine" each received three. Melonie Diaz' nomination was somewhat surprising: Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer was widely expected to receive a nomination. Oscar Isaac's nomination continues the popular trend for the Coen brother's film which won the Grand Prize at Cannes. Isaac performs all his own singing in the film.
