Hillary Clinton spoke at a brunch to benefit the Mexican-American Leadership Initiative at USC. The Los Angeles Times reports that the former (and possibly future) presidential candidate pressed congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform. "Our diversity is one of our great strengths," said Clinton. "Part of the obvious argument for immigration reform is that we are a country of immigrants, and we should be celebrating that rather than fearing it." The former Secretary of State then went on to talk about her previous efforts helping Latinos in the US and across Latin America.
Hillary Clinton, who was presented with an award by the Mexican-American Leadership Initiative (MALI) and said she was "very grateful." Latinos across the country are big supporters of Clinton: in the 2008 democratic primaries, Clinton received almost twice as much support from Hispanic voters as President Obama. Although she has not made a formal announcement, Clinton is widely expected to make a bid for the 2016 presidential election: garnering Hispanic support will be once again key for any democratic candidate.
Clinton was introduced by former cabinet minister Henry Cisneros who said "From time to time on the horizon of American history, there appears a leader whose depth of understanding, whose proven experience and untiring dedication makes that leader precisely the right person for that time. Such a leader is First Lady, U.S. Senator and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. And such a time -- such a time is now."
