June is Immigrant Heritage Month and with Donald Trump’s damaging and incredibly inaccurate rhetoric about immigrants spreading across the United States, it is important that we stick together and remind America that this country has a lot to thank foreigners for.
“You can trace back from trains being built, cities and industries being developed because of different influxes of people who came in,” says actress Rosario Dawson in a video promoting a new campaign titled “I Am An Immigrant.” “It’s incredible to be a part of a culture that’s just still living. What we expect, or think about what America is, is fluid.”
The campaign, which was launched on June 1, aims to encourage everyone out there to explore their individual heritage and recognize their distinct and shared experiences.
“What I think it’s so wonderful about America is the fact that it is a society of immigrants,” states Lupita Nyong’o, an African descent who was born in Mexico and is making a living in the U.S.
Throughout the clip, artists and entertainers explain why we should join forces and celebrate the monumental contributions that immigrants have made, and continue to make, every day.
“Every time we get a chance to say out loud that we are immigrants, it is important that we embrace that opportunity,” actor Wilmer Valderrama declares.
“I Am An Immigrant” wants to honor the sacrifices of all the families who have had the courage to leave it all behind in order to achieve the American dream, as well as their struggles and their successes.
Former “The View” host Rosie Perez, who was allegedly fired from the show for not apologizing to Kelly Osbourne after she made a horrible “joke” about immigrants, joins the movement and says, “I stand with immigrants, one hundred percent.”
