Hyundai and Kia have announced a recall for more than 1.9 million vehicles on Wednesday. According to the South Korean automaker, a stop lamp switch defect can cause the brake likes to malfunction.

According to U.S. safety regulators, the switch defect can stop the brake lights from illuminating despite driver application of the brake pedal. What's more, the cruise control may also not turn off when a driver engages the brakes.

Beyond brake application, the recall also addresses an issue involving the intermitten operation of the push-button start. Finally, the cars can also experience trouble moving the gearbox out of park and will cause the electronic stability control warning light to turn on.

The extensive brake light recall affects the 2007-2009 Hyundai Accent, and Tuscon; the 2007-2011 Santa Fe; the 2008-2009 Veracruz; the 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe; and the 2011 Sonata.

For Kia, the 2007-2010 Rondo and Sportage; the 2007-2011 Sorento; the 2007 Sedona; the 2010-2011 Soul; and the 2011 Optima are in the list of recalled models as well.

A plagueing issue among Hyundai, the recall is actually the second of its kind. Hyundai announced a recall for half a million cars in 2009 due to similar issures. Hyundai was confident the issue was fixed when the company swapped the switch assembly.

Hyundai and Kia will ready the next recall service starting June 2013. According to the automaker, certified Hyundai and Kia dealers will accept your recalled vehicle for a new stop lam switch replacement free of charge.
