According to the National Hurricane Center's latest public advisory issued on Sunday, Oct. 28, 2012 at 8:00 a.m. EDT, Hurricane Sandy is approximately 395 miles (635 km) south of New York City with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 km/h) and moving north east at about 10 mph (17 km/h).

While the hurricane center predicts little change in Sandy's wind strengths during the next couple of days, it forecasts winds reaching almost near hurricane force upon landfall.

Landfall is expected to occur between Monday (Oct.29) late afternoon and Tuesday (Oct. 30) morning.

The advisory also states that Sandy is expected to "bring life-threatening storm surge flooding to the mid-atlantic coast including Long Island and New York harbor..."

New York

In New York, Governor Andrew Cuomo issued a press release stating that he has directed the MTA to begin planning a possible "orderly suspension of all subway, bus and commuter railroad service, if Hurricane Sandy continues to bear down on the New York City metropolitan area." On Long Island, both Suffolk and Nassau Counties declared State of Emergency and ordered the evacuation of Fire Island.

The NYC metropolitan area is expected to see changes in weather patterns starting Sunday as rain and wind increase throughout the day. On Monday and Tuesday, the region may experience sustained winds between 40 to 50 mph and rainfall could reach 3 to 6 inches according to AMNY.

New Jersey

In New Jersey, Governor Chris Christie announced, "preparations have officially begun for the potential shutdown of NJ TRANSIT bus, rail, light rail and Access Link service, effective Monday, October 29." Christie also used his official Twitter account to inform New Jersey residents of the latest Hurricane Sandy updates affecting that state.

Massachusetts

In the New England commonwealth of Massachusetts, Governor Deval Patrick announced that a State of Emergency has been declared and that a request to the White House for a 'Pre-Landfall Emergency Declaration' had been submitted on Saturday.

Washington D.C.

In the Washington D.C. area, Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell and D.C. Mayor Vincent C. Gray all issued State of Emergencies on Friday.
