Princess Diana and Queen Elizabeth had an amicable relationship with each other while the former was still married to Prince Charles. But it cannot be said that the two female royals were very close.

In fact, while the Prince and Princess of Wales were struggling with their marriage, Princess Diana reached out to the Queen for advice. But in one of her interviews, the mom of two said that Her Majesty wasn’t very helpful.

Months later, Prince William and Prince Harry’s mom decided to take matters into her own hands, but doing so made the monarch furious. In the book “Charles: A Biography,” royal author Anthony Holden said that the Queen was very upset after Princess Diana issued a personal statement agreeing to an “uncontested divorce” from the heir to the throne.

The Queen was surprised by the move because Princess Diana didn’t inform her beforehand about her plan. Prince Charles didn’t also have any idea that his then wife will be issuing a statement regarding their impending divorce.

“Unilaterally, and thus most provocatively, she offered the world her own version of the conclusions negotiated with Charles,” Holden said. “So furious was the Queen about Diana’s pre-emption of Palace protocol that she gave aides rare authorization to leak her displeasure. The Queen was ‘most interested,’ mused her spokesman, to hear that the Princess of Wales had agreed to divorce her son,” he added.

But in the end, a royal expert revealed that it was the Queen who urged Prince Charles and Princess Diana to finalize their divorce. She reached the decision after learning about the late royal’s interview for Panorama.

While speaking with Martin Bashir, Princess Diana didn’t only expose the dirt about her marriage and Prince Charles and Camilla’s affair, but she also criticized the royal family. For instance, the Princess of Wales told Bashir that the royal family and the public saw her as a liability after she separated from Prince Charles because they were no longer living together.
