Prince William and Prince Harry had a different upbringing from their cousins Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice. Both sets of cousins experienced very different childhood, with Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice having enjoyed something that Prince William and Prince Harry did not.
Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice’s childhood was not perfect. They were still very young when their parents, Princes Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, publicly announced their divorce. Despite how they ended up, the former royal couple has managed to keep a relaxed relationship and remain on good terms with each other for their children.
A few years ago, Princess Beatrice told the media how her mother served as her inspiration growing up. “We’ve been through some incredibly stressful times together as a family and every single minute she created joy,” she said. “I am so lucky that I get to learn from her every single day,” she added.
The Duke and Duchess of York divorced in 1996 but decided to stay close after their separation for the sake of their children. Today, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson are living under the same roof with Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice while maintaining their close friendship.
Meanwhile, Prince William and Prince Harry had a completely different childhood from their cousins. While Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice enjoyed a sense of stability with their parents beside them every step of the way, Prince William and Prince Harry did not.
Because they are the sons of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, the two princes grew up getting too much attention from the media and did not enjoy the privacy that their cousins did. “Beatrice and Eugenie have had a stability that William and Harry have found painfully lacking in their lives,” said royal author Ingrid Seward.
When they were young, Prince William and Prince Harry witnessed how their mother struggled because of Prince Charles. They witnessed how their parents divorced and how its domino effect eventually led to the tragic death of Princess Diana. As they got caught in between their warring parents, Prince William and Prince Harry had to get used to the overwhelming media attention at a very young age.
Most importantly, the death of Princess Diana robbed the two young princes of a mother, and this loss deeply affected them as they grew up. “Prince Harry said missing a mother is like missing some kind of security, how you need that as a son and it falls away when you lose your mother,” said royal correspondent Dennis van der Stroom.
