Prince William and Prince Harry have been treated and regarded differently ever since they were born. But royal fans have the impression that the Duke of Sussex is the naughtier of the two royals. However, this wasn’t always the case.
Even though Prince Harry grew up to be a troubled prince following the death of Princess Diana, when he and his older brother were kids, Prince William was also quite a handful. In fact, the Princess of Wales gave the second in line to the throne the nickname “Your Royal Naughtiness.”
In the book “Harry: Conversations With The Prince,” royal author Angela Levin shared details from Prince Harry’s christening three months after he was born. She said that all eyes were on Prince William as the brother of the newest addition to the royal family, but the Duke of Cambridge disliked the attention.
“He wriggled nonstop when he was told to sit down next to his father and looked equally cross that he wasn’t allowed to hold his baby brother,” Levin said. “His behavior made it very difficult for Lord Snowdon, the former husband of Princess Margaret, who was trying to take the official photographs,” she added.
Lord Snowdon’s assistant reportedly commented on how the senior royals reacted every time Prince William would do something naughty. Instead of reprimanding him, they all roared with laughter.
While at Prince Harry’s christening, Prince Charles also tried to capture Prince William’s attention by telling him a story. But the young boy rolled his eyes in an attempt to say that he wasn’t interested. When the Princess of Wales saw this, she didn’t take Prince William’s behavior seriously. She just jokingly gave him his new nickname.
Princess Diana also gave Prince Harry a special nickname when he was much younger. Levin said that the Duke of Sussex showed signs that he was interested in becoming king. As such, she called him “Good King Harry.”
But the Princess of Wales’ preference toward Prince Harry as the future king didn’t mean that she didn’t want Prince William for the role. Princess Diana knew that the Duke of Cambridge never wanted to be king even when he was a young boy.
