The members of the royal family are one of the most recognizable people in the world that it’s hard for them to blend in with the public. They can’t go out shopping, dine in restaurants, watch movies and do any other activity without people crowding around them. Going out in public could even endanger their life from people with bad intentions.

The British royal family has security escorts, but bringing them along is a sure way to attract attention when in public places. These protection officers dress in plain clothes so they can still do their job while the royals go around without causing a scene. Below are other ways they slip in and out of restaurants, clothing shops, grocery stores and other places.

Simon Morgan, former member of the security team who served the royals for seven years, shared to Reader’s Digest how Prince Harry and Meghan Markle once went incognito to buy something at a local health store. He said that when the couple visited the store, people didn’t notice them go in and out as they wore very casual clothes that normal people usually wear.

The security team was with them, noted Morgan, but they were also in jeans and shirts. And they didn’t block people to make way for Prince Harry and Meghan as doing this will certainly blow their cover.

The former security of the royals added that as one of the protection officers, he also followed the “discrete and unobtrusive” rule when Queen Elizabeth, Kate Middleton and other royals want to go out in public. They do this by blending in with the people, and when someone seems to notice the royals in the street, the protection officers would immediately react and say, “No, that couldn’t have been.”

Someone wrote on Quora that the royal family doesn’t go out in disguise and are known to just walk around freely, and people then give them space. For instance, the user said that the locals usually leave Queen Elizabeth alone when she’s out to take a walk in the park or visit a tea shop while her protection officer would be around in the background, watching her unobtrusively.

But in another report, it was said that for Meghan, who enjoys sneaking out of Kensington Palace, she needs to hide her identity to avoid the paparazzi, who watch and photograph her every move. She puts on disguise whenever she goes to the Whole Foods Market or to Pilates sessions.

“She spends most of her weekends in the Cotswolds with Harry,” a source told People. “When she does venture out to Pilates or to get her hair done, she normally goes incognito under a baseball cap.”

Prince Harry was also said to make an effort not to be recognized in public by going out as “Winston.” He often wears strange outfits as Winston, and he does this to mix in with the public and always succeeds. For Prince William, he simply wears a mustache and a flat cap to go out undetected.
