Prince Edward will reportedly struggle with his royal life in the future because of his two conflicting desires. The dad of two is a member of the royal family, but he also wants to be regarded as a private citizen.
In the coming years, the Earl of Wessex is expected to inherit Prince Philip’s title as the Duke of Edinburgh. When this happens, he would most likely become involved in more royal duties and engagements.
Royal author Ingrid Seward described in her book “Prince Edward” how Sophie’s husband pleaded with the media to leave him and his then girlfriend alone so that their relationship could progress on their own pace. The move was surprising because Prince Edward released a personal statement to the press and not one that came from Buckingham Palace.
“By choosing to handle the matter himself, rather than issuing a statement through Buckingham Palace, Edward (who no longer drew monies from the Civil List) was emphasizing his status as a probate citizen,” Seward said. Prince Edward and Sophie tied the knot in 1999, and they have been happily married ever since.
Meanwhile, the royal couple also made headlines this week after their wedding was revisited. Unlike the other couples that came before them, Prince Edward and Sophie opted to not kiss each other on the lips while in front of the massive crowd.
According to Hello! magazine, the Wessexes refused to kiss each other in public because they considered their royal wedding as a private event. But one of the guests at their wedding reception revealed that the couple did kiss while they were at the reception venue.
“When they left the main room, they gave each other a kiss,” the guest said. “It was a great private moment,” the guest added.
Four years after tying the knot, Prince Edward and Sophie welcomed their first child, Lady Louise Windsor. The teenager will turn 16 on Nov. 8. Four years after Lady Louise’s birth, her brother, James, Viscount Severn, was born on Dec. 17.
Last week, it was reported that Queen Elizabeth’s favorite grandchild is actually Lady Louise. The 15-year-old bonded with her grandmother last summer.
