Prince Andrew was recently accused of disrespecting Princess Diana shortly after her death. The Princess of Wales passed away on Aug. 31, 1997, following a fatal car crash in Paris.
During her appearance on “Loose Women,” panelist Denise Welch shared details about her previous meeting with the Duke of York. The two first met together with Welch’s ex-husband, Tom Healey, at the Western Spirit royal gala for a charity that they’re supporting.
The panelist revealed that she and the other gala attendees agreed that they will not talk about Princess Diana to show their respect for the late royal. Prince Andrew soon proved that he wasn’t on board with the plan.
“Myself and this cricketer, who I won’t name, had made a decision not to mention Princess Diana because she had only recently died,” she said. “I have never met Diana but loved her so much and was mortified when she died, like a lot of people. Anyway, Prince Andrew was very keen to talk about her and he brought it up,” she added.
Welch went on to say that Sarah Ferguson’s ex-husband started saying disrespectful things about Prince Charles’ ex-wife. Panelist Nadia Sawalha asked Welch what exactly the dad of two said.
“Back in the day, I liked a vodka or two, and all I can say is he got up to leave, walked around to the top of the table, put his hand on my then-husband’s shoulder and said, ‘Rather you than me, sir,’” Welch revealed.
Sawalha asked if Prince Andrew’s statement came after Welch told him how she felt, and the panelist said yes. Welch also said that she was very cross with Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie’s father.
Prince Andrew and Princess Diana used to be very close. In fact, there were rumors suggesting that they were better suited as a couple. In the book “Andrew: The Playboy Prince,” royal author Andrew Morton said that the Duke of York and the Princess of Wales were so close that they used to tease each other a lot.
“At the Buckingham Palace reception afterward, clown prince Andrew was on his best form, teasing his new sister-in-law and telling the new Princess of Wales: ‘You married my father,’” Morton said. Prince Andrew was also the one who encouraged Prince Charles to kiss Princess Diana on the balcony of the Palace.
