Kate Middleton reportedly went through a very interesting phase in her relationship with Prince William after the couple split and then got back together. During their decade-long relationship as boyfriend and girlfriend, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge split twice.

In the documentary “Kate: The Making Of A Modern Queen,” royal author Catherine Meyer said that the royal couple faced a “testing period” in their relationship years ago. And this so-called testing or proving period was very interesting.

“Which was very clearly a testing period, a proving period, something where she had already been through the baptism of fire in terms of what it meant for destroying any chance of a private life she would ever have,” Meyer said. “She went into it in that sense with her eyes open. The one thing I suppose she may not have known and will now know very well is just how peculiar royal life is.”

Following Kate and Prince William’s split, the former lost her right to lead a private life. Paparazzi followed her everywhere, and they stalked her outside her home after they thought that Prince William would soon propose to her.

According to Meyer, Kate didn’t also have as much privacy when she lived in the Palace. “It is the strangest place that I have ever spent time in, the palaces, just that sense of never ever being really alone,” Meyer said.

Prior to their breakup, a friend close to the Duchess of Cambridge said that Kate only wanted Prince William to propose to her, but he didn’t. Rather, the dad of three decided to call it quits after he felt that all of the fun in their relationship has disappeared.

“As far as she was concerned, it wasn’t a question of ‘if,’ just ‘when,’” Kate’s friend told Daily Mail. “She openly admitted that she expected a formal announcement to be made by Clarence House,” the pal added.

The Duke of Cambridge felt that he wasn’t ready to settle down years ago, but he eventually came around when he realized that he couldn’t let Kate go completely. Three years after the couple’s second split, Prince William and Kate got engaged. They tied the knot on April 29, 2011.
