The friendship of Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato started when they landed roles on Disney Channel shows. While the three of them are no longer as present in each other’s lives as they used to be a decade ago, they just know that they will always be there for each other no matter what. Here are the bumps in their decade-long friendship that prove that no true friendship is ever drama-free.
Gomez Hooks Up With Nick Jonas
All the drama started when Gomez dated Jonas not so long after he broke up with Cyrus. Shortly after that, Cyrus made a video with a friend making fun of Lovato and Gomez’s music video. While Cyrus took down the video and apologized to her two friends after that, it was clear that tension among the three was already brewing.
It’s Always Two Against One
When Gomez and Lovato starred in “Princess Protection Program” in 2009, their bond grew stronger than ever. Gomez confirmed this in an interview when she said that she and Lovato do almost everything together. While Lovato is also close to Cyrus, the same can’t be said for Gomez and Cyrus, who’d grown increasingly distant since the Nick Jonas hookup.
Lovato Is Jealous Of Taylor Swift
In 2019, a fan asked Lovato how her BFF Gomez was doing. “Ask Taylor,” she responded. That same year, Lovato threw shade at Gomez and suggested that something was totally off for the both of them. “True friends don’t let their friends or family be mean to you,” Lovato said in an interview. “If you can’t trust somebody, you can’t be friends with them,” she added.
Lovato Enters The Rehab And All Three Are Friends Again
When Lovato entered rehab for the first time in 2011, the artist revealed that Gomez was the first person to reach out to her. “Selena called me crying when I was there and was just so worried,” she revealed. And just like that, they’re like BFFs again, giggling together on the red carpet at the 2011 Kids’ Choice Awards shortly after Lovato’s release from the rehab. Cyrus also joined the mix.
Lovato Gushes About Gomez And Cyrus
In an interview in 2012, Lovato revealed that she and Cyrus would always brutally fight because they’re both strongheaded. She revealed how her friendship was different with Gomez, whom she described as a non-confrontational person. “Both of them will never leave my life no matter what happens because we’ve been through so much together,” she said.
Their Friendship Almost Reaches A Dead End
Lovato talked about Cyrus and admitted that she didn’t have anything to do with her old friend anymore. She also unfollowed Gomez on Instagram, saying that it’s just one of those things where “people change” and “people grow apart.”
Lovato Dumps Cyrus On Twitter
A year after she revealed how she and Cyrus had grown apart, Lovato unfollowed the “Hanna Montana” star on Twitter while re-following Gomez on Instagram, whom she unfollowed a year prior. Just when everybody thought it’s friendship over between her and Gomez, she posted a photo of her with her old friend on Instagram to greet her a happy birthday with the hashtag “#sameoldlove.”
Gomez Undergoes Kidney Transplant
For years, Lovato, Gomez and Cyrus have kept their friendship low-key that it almost made people wonder if they’re still even friends. But when Gomez faced one of the biggest trials in her life in 2017, Lovato was there. As she recovered for a kidney transplant brought on by her lupus, Lovato said in an interview that Gomez was a very strong woman, and she couldn’t be more proud of her.
Cyrus Defends Gomez From Stefano Gabbana
A year after Gomez’s surgery, while she was recovering from Justin Bieber, Dolce & Gabbana co-designer Stefano Gabbana called Gomez “ugly,” and her longtime friend Cyrus was quick to defend her by calling out Gabbana. Their fans went into frenzy after assuming that Gomez and Cyrus had stopped being friends ages ago. It turned out they’re still a squad, after all.
Today, Gomez, Cyrus and Lovato are already busy with their respective careers. Fans no longer see them on the red carpet together, but Cyrus’ recent move to slam Gomez’s detractor on social media was proof that they still got each other’s backs.
Cyrus also revealed in an interview earlier this year that there wasn’t really any serious feud among them. “I grew up collaborating with Demi and Selena, there was never any competition,” she said.
