House Democrats are blasting the White House's decision to involve Elon Musk in the investigation of the Signal chat leak, calling it an absurd move that undermines the seriousness of the breach.

On Thursday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced that Musk's team would be assisting the National Security Council and White House Counsel's Office in investigating how a journalist was added to a private Signal group with top security officials.

In response, Democrats erupted in outrage, with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) posting on X that the decision was a blow to the public's intelligence.

"It must say 'dumb f***in idiot' written across all our foreheads," DCCC wrote on X.

The controversy erupted after The Atlantic reported Monday that its editor-in-chief, Jeffrey Goldberg, had been accidentally added to a private Signal chat earlier this month. The group involved top U.S. national security officials, including National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, CIA Director John Ratcliffe and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.

The chat included discussions of U.S. military operations, leading to accusations that Trump administration officials were sharing sensitive attack plans over an unsecured channel. While the White House and President Donald Trump insist no classified material was exchanged, the leak has sparked intense scrutiny.

Critics argue that Musk, who has faced scrutiny for his own handling of social media security, is unqualified to oversee such a sensitive national security matter.

Meanwhile, The Atlantic has doubled down on its reporting, releasing additional messages from the chat that reference military operations.
