It's the end of an era. Hotmail, a pioneer in the world of email and internet communications, is gone.

As of Friday May 3, every Hotmail account will have been migrated to Outlook.com, a revised version of Microsoft's newer email server. The accounts will stay the same, with @hotmail.com remaining but the interface will have nothing to do with the old Hotmail design.

Microsoft released a statement about the defunct email giant on Tuesday. "We're excited to announce that we've completed upgrading all Hotmail customers to Outlook.com. Coupled with the growing organic excitement for Outlook.com, this has pushed us to over 400 million active Outlook.com accounts, including 125 million that are accessing email, calendar and contacts on a mobile device using Exchange ActiveSync," it read.

Two new features have been announced, that Hotmail users can take advantage of starting May 3, including a Simple Mail Transfer protocol, a mobile device-friendly way for receiving your email, and deeper integration with SkyDrive, Microsoft's cloud storage.

So long, Hotmail.
