Match Preview

Honduras defeated Haiti in their tournament opener 2-0 and followed it up with a 1-0 win over rival El Salvador.

Playing well on the defensive end throughout the tournament has certainly propelled the Honduran nationals to the top of Group B and while their goals have come in timely fashion, head coach Luis Fernando Suarez knows there is still room for improvement since the first 2 matches gave the team trouble in spots.

"Our two previous games have been very complicated for us," Suarez told reporters. "We are hoping for a good game and to qualify to the next round. I believe our mentality has stayed the same. We are very positive and hope to show that in the game. I will be making some changes to the lineup, but I'm not sure how many as yet."

Rony Martinez and Jorge Claros Juarez have been able to provide clutch scoring for Honduras in the tournament, another reason why the team has been able to earn 6 points. The goal from Juarez in the 91st minute against El Salvador proved to be the game-winner, propelling the team to a tremendous victory over its biggest rival.

If Honduras and head coach Luis Suarez can find a way to up the offensive intensity while maintaining top-level defensive control, expect them to add another 3 points to the Group B total.

While Honduras continues to play well, the Soca Warriors are in serious need of a win with the elimination round up next.

Earning a 2-2 tie with El Salvador to start their tournament schedule, Trinidad followed that performance up with a disappointing 2-0 loss to Haiti.

Surrendering both goals to Haitian national star Jean Maurice in the 16th and 53rd minute, Trinidad was never able to recover as their offense couldn't find a comfortable rhythm in either half.

"We are quite aware of the importance of the game to us and we are hopeful to improve our performance and get ourselves into the next round," coach Stephen Hart said of the upcoming match. "I don't think playing after El Salvador gives us any advantage. We have to win the game. We control our own destiny."

Trinidad has shown the ability to be competitive in this tournament but going up against an extremely talented Honduras team next, their tournament run may soon come to an end.
