Match Preview

Honduras was the Group B favorite heading into the July 7 start of the CONCACAF Gold Cup and after a solid 2-0 victory over Haiti, the Honduran national team left no doubt as to why they should be looked up as the top dog.

The Catrachos took the early advantage in the blink of an eye thanks to Rony Martinez's first international goal. Scoring in the third minute off a beautiful in-traffic feed from Mario Martinez, Rony and company were out to the ever-important early lead.

Honduras held off multiple opportunities from Haiti throughout the game and with a goal from second-half substitute Marvin Chavez in the 77th minute, Honduras was well on their way to earning 3 points. Thanks to a shutout performance from keeper Donis Escober, the Honduran nationals head into their upcoming match with El Salvador sitting atop the group.

While Honduras looks for win No. 2, El Salvador hopes to erase bad memories from their tough finish against Trinidad and Tobago.

Leading 2-1 with just under 20 minutes remaining, the Salvadoran nationals surrendered a goal to Kenwyne Jones that evened the score at two-all. Jones took a strong 35-yard feed from teammate Joevin Jones and sent his shot past goalkeeper Dagoberto Portillo.

El Salvador's offense did receive a strong showing from striker Rodolfo Zelaya that helped soften the blow of Jones' late goal but the Salvadorians were still unable to walk away with the three point-earning triumph.

Producing a crucial point in the draw helped El Salvador remain in the hunt for the top spot in Group B, even if their next opponent is the group leader and most talented team in the pool.
