It looks like "Homeland" is getting a serious home wreck, now that Nicholas Brody has been eliminated from Showtime's high intensity drama it seems like his family is also getting the axe. Fans have characterized Brody's on-screen daughter Dana as the most hated character on television, and now the show's producers have finally heard fans request and seriously reduced her screen time in Season 4. In addition to Brody being killed in last night's Season 3 premiere, TV Line reports that Dana, played by Morgan Saylor, and Morena Baccarin, who plays Dana's mother Jess, won't be returning as series regulars for Season 4.
The two female characters who are both original cast members were seen less frequently as the Season 3 story line progressed, the first 3 episodes heavily focused on Brody's home life. Although, fans of the Showtime series ridiculed the writers and producers of "Homeland" for the angsty teenager's prominent place in the third seasons plot. Now after hearing the angry Twitter sphere arupt into vilent threats, "Homeland" has reduced the two actresses role to "guest stars" and moved away from "broken family" storyline. Despite the backlash from the storyline, show runner Alex Ganza revealed that the decision to highlight Brody's family in the beginning of Season 3 was a deliberate one. "There are all these families that are the victims of somebody in the family doing an act of violence. Whether it's Sandy Hook, whether it's Columbine, the Boston Marathon bombers, these people all have families who suffer the consequences of these psychopathic actions," Ganza told New York Magazine.
Season 4 of "Homeland" will certainly be a new direction for the series; the show, which was built around the inner workings of the CIA and Nicholas Brody, will need a new direction. Carrie, played by Claire Danes, will still serve as the show's main protagonist however instead of the bipolar CIA agent we have come to know, Carrie may have a new role as a mother. In addition to Carrie's surprise pregnancy, Saul's departure from the CIA leaves his role on the series hanging in limbo. "Homeland" performs it's best when revolving around Carrie, Saul and the authenticity behind United Stated espionage, hopefully the writers will continue with the second half of Season 3 and bring the two characters back together at Langley.
