A Rhode Island woman police described as "highly intoxicated" claimed she "only had two shots" before crashing her vehicle with her 10-month-old baby inside.
The Scituate (RI) Police Department responded to a report of a vehicle with front-end damage and its airbags deployed driving off the road on Monday.
Law enforcement arrived to find Jennifer Colon, 41, holding her 10-month-old son outside of the vehicle, according to reporting by WPRI 12, while nearly falling over several times.
Officers conducted a field sobriety test, during which Colon said she "only had two shots," before she fell backward to the ground. When law enforcement attempted to help her stand, WPRI 12 reported Colon got combative and allegedly started kicking and striking officers.
Police then took Colon into custody and said she continued resisting arrest. She was then taken to a nearby hospital "due to concerns of her highly intoxicated state."
Her baby was unharmed in the crash but was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation. He and another child were reportedly taken into custody by the Department of Children, Youth, and Families.
Colon was later booked and charged with two counts of child neglect and endangerment and single counts of DUI, reckless driving, simple assault, resisting arrests, and disorderly conduct.
