It's no secret that the magical product giving celebrities their enviable glow on the red carpet and on screen is created with a multi-purpose product: the highlighter. Available in many consistencies -- liquid, cream, stick, and powder -- the highlighter has gone from a Hollywood secret to a staple in every woman's makeup bag.

The trick to emulating a celebrity glow is knowing where to apply highlighter. There are six places to apply highlighter: along your cheekbones, on the bridge of your nose, on your brow bone (under your eyebrows), in the inner corners of your eyes, in the dip of your cupid's bow and on the bottom of your chin.

Apart from how knowing where to apply highlighter, it's crucial to know what products to buy. Purchase the wrong product and you are at risk of using a product that doesn't show on your skin, or worse: looking like a glittery disco ball. While many highlighters on the market offer a glitter finish, we are partial towards the products that give a glow without making it obvious, creating a "lit from within" look.

Below are four highlighters we swear by:

1. Dior 'Diorskin' Ultra Shimmering Allover Face Powder: If you've got a generous budget and want something that is perfect for the night, then Dior's 'Diorskin' Ultra Shimmering Allover Face Powder is the perfect highlighter. Not only is the palette anesthetically beautiful -- I refrained from opening mine for a good two weeks because it was too beautiful to taint -- but it comes in two shades: Rose Diamond and Amber Diamond. Tip: Apply delicately and build up your coverage to fit your needs.

2. RMS Beauty Living Luminizer: Want an all-natural highlighter that is good for your skin and makes it glow? Sounds like a mythical product, but RMS's highlighter offers exactly that. The product is sheer and certified organic, made with coconut oil and castor seed oil. Since the all-natural product doesn't have any controversial ingredients, you can apply it on top of your foundation, mix it with your foundation, or add it to your bare face.

3. BENEFIT Watt's Up: There's a lot to love about Benefit's Watt's Up stick highlighter -- it's compact, it's versatile, and it's easy to blend seamlessly into your skin. This highlighter is available in one color, but the one shade matches all skin tones. The cream finish is ideal for blending it into your face, with or without makeup. We really love this product for highlighting the bride of the nose and the cheekbones. If you apply it lightly, it can be worn naturally during the day.

4. EDWARD BESS All Over Seduction (Afterglow): This cream-based highlighter became an instant favorite, as it is perfect for daytime application and it suits all skin tones. There's a fine line between highlighting and going glitter crazy, but this highlighter steers far away from overdone faux shine. We're hooked and obsessed -- and one can argue that I can no longer step out of the house without applying highlighter. The sheerness makes it perfect for highlighting your eyebrows and the bridge of your nose.
