A 30-year-old woman who taught at the Sebring High School was arrested Friday on the grounds of engaging in a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old student.
Ariel Madden Reed was charged with 10 counts of sexual battery upon an underage victim while having the custodial authority of that student, cited in an arrest affidavit obtained by People. Reed has been booked into the Highlands County Jail, and is being held without bond. Jonathan Patrick Reed, her husband was also arrested on the grounds of being charged with interference with the execution of a search warrant.
Suspicious grew after a school officer learned that the boy reportedly had questionable images of Reed on his phone. The boy dropped disturbing information -- describing various sexual encounters with Ariel that happened over the past three months.
“If we find out that there's a teacher inappropriately involved with a student, they're going to go to jail,” said Scott Dressel, public information officer with the Highlands County Sheriff's Office to the WFLA. “A 30-year-old woman can't have a relationship with a 15-year old, at least not that kind of relationship,” Dressel added.
As per the affidavit, the liaison began sometime around December. The boy alleged that Ariel and he kissed “a little” in her car just before Christmas break. But things escalated a little too quick and she parked the car midway and made out with him.
The boy revealed that Ariel had opened up about being attracted to him right from the start. The affidavit revealed that the two began to have sex during the Christmas break, post which they went on to having sex at multiple places -- at Reed's home often in the presence of her husband, her car, and in the closet in her classroom at the high school.
Not much has been disclosed about whether the Reeds have retained attorneys, who could speak on their behalf. They haven’t yet entered pleas. She continues to remain in jail, per reports.
"I want to commend the staff at Sebring High School for taking immediate action and quickly notifying the school resource deputy, as well as the Special Victims Unit for working quickly to develop this case," said Sheriff Paul Blackman in the release.
