A high school student died after he unexpectedly suffered cardiac arrest and collapsed at a school in Las Vegas on Sunday, Jan. 8.

Jordan Brister, 18, a high school senior, suddenly and unexpectedly suffered cardiac arrest and collapsed during school hours at a southwest valley charter school at 8377 W. Patrick Lane in Las Vegas. The school staff provided Brister with emergency medical attention until paramedics arrived and transported him to Southern Hills Hospital, Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

After undergoing treatment at the hospital for over a week, despite the efforts of first responders and the medical team at the hospital, Brister succumbed to his complications and died on Sunday, Jan. 8.

The Clark County coroner’s office has not ruled on his cause of death as of Tuesday, Jan. 10.

According to a GoFundMe page set for Brister, Brister planned to join the military after graduating from high school.

Following the boy's death, Amplus Academy released a statement in connection with the incident.

“Amplus Academy’s Crisis Response Team, including our school counselors, licensed therapists, and social workers, are working to support students and staff as they process this grief,” officials from the charter school at 8377 W. Patrick Lane wrote in the statement.

“Words cannot express what the Brister family is going through and there will never be enough answers as to why this has happened,” the post states. “He was an amazing kid who loved life to the fullest.”

Meanwhile, Savanna Brister, Jordan Brister’s mother, stated that her son was a “selfless, respectful, Southern gentleman who was kind to everyone.”

“He was witty and charming,” she said. “He wanted to join the military to become a pararescue jumper to save others. In the end, he saved others through the donation of his organs, so his dream was somewhat fulfilled. He was a wise, older brother who cared deeply for his brother and sister. Jordan was truly everything you could ask for and more. He had a heart of gold.”

Brister’s death was the second reported death of a high school student in Clark County in the span of just a few days. Last week, Desert Oasis sophomore Ashari Hughes died after she collapsed during a flag football game.

The Clark County coroner’s office ruled that Hughes, 16, died from a congenital heart condition.
