A junior high school boy and his mother were left aghast by a gruesome discovery on Sunday afternoon after the youngster was able to hook on to skeletal remains while fishing in a pond in Kadoma City, Osaka Prefecture.
The young boy was reportedly accompanied by his mother for a leisurely afternoon of fishing when at around 4 p.m. he managed to pull in what seemed to be human remains in an advanced state of decomposition, Japan Today reported.
The two immediately alerted the police after the horrific discovery. The boy reportedly had fished from the pond skeletal remains consisting of a person's lower body, waist, and knees, the Sankei Shimbun publication noted.
The age and gender of the corpse remain a mystery, however, the skeletal remains were still wearing part of what seemed like tattered long black pants.
Police on Monday began a comprehensive search of the pond for the rest of the remain's body. The small body of water was around 3,000 square meters in size.
In an unrelated but similar story, an unidentified corpse was found inside a suitcase along the shore of Lake Biwa in Hikone, Shiga Prefecture, on May 17.
According to Shiga Prefectural Police, the age and gender of the body cannot be identified, and they are investigating the incident as a case of corpse abandonment.
The Mainichi reported that an 83-year-old local man found the suitcase during a noon stroll.
The Hikone Police were contacted around 2:30 p.m. after a municipal official confirmed that the luggage contained a human arm and other body parts.
According to investigators, the suitcase, missing half its lid, contained a corpse wrapped in a silver sheet. Parts of the remains were reportedly already bare bones.
In another incident, the body of a man who died of an apparent drowning was found at a university's lake in August last year in Fukuoka City, the Tokyo Reporter wrote.
Police ruled the cause of death as a suicide. Law enforcement said that the unclothed body was discovered in a state of decomposition but showed no signs of external wounds.
Two days later, the police were able to identify the remains to belong to a 25-year-old graduate student. The father of the said student reported that he was missing the day of discovery.
Police received accounts of a naked man chasing a female student near the lake days before the gruesome discovery. Several persons also said they saw a man regularly swimming in the water days prior to the incident.
