A Kentucky school district's decision to host an outdoor celebration during a scorching day has landed them in hot water.

The Harrison County School District was forced hold a special meeting Monday evening with parents after hosting an outdoor event at the high school's football stadium, during which several students reported feeling unwell, according to FOX56.

Temperatures in the area exceeded 90 degrees during the event, and after nearly three hours of sun exposure, students experienced sunburn, vomiting, fainting, and were pleading for water, the news outlet reported.

"I want to apologize, again to my earlier message, to all students, staff, and parents for any individual adverse effects they experience on this day," School Superintendent Dr. Harry Burchett said to parents at the meeting, which was attended by approximately 150 people.

Parents shared texts from teachers indicating they had to divide two bottles of water among an entire class. Additionally, some teachers reportedly distributed ice cubes from their own water bottles to help keep students cool.

Burchett refuted these claims, FOX56 reported, stating that water was accessible saying, "Water was available onsite as needed as part of the safety and first aid station."

Several parents demanded the resignation of the Superintendent and school board members.

Parents expressed that the most distressing aspect was the trauma their children experienced from what they witnessed, with many stating that their kids were reluctant to return to school and came home after the event fearing that people had died.

The meeting did not permit discussion with the board. However, the board stated that it would consider all comments as it strives to prevent a similar situation from occurring in the future, and future meetings will be held to address the issue.
