You have no idea how much I love the new Hellcat Challenger SRT. At 707 horsepower and 650 lb.-ft. of torque, this supercharged 6.2 liter Hellcat engine is more powerful than superexotics including the Lamborghini Aventador, Ferrari FF, new Corvette Z06, and even SRT's own V10 Viper. Despite the reckless performance numbers, we had absolutely no idea just how phenomenal the Hellcat Challenger would be on the asphalt... until now.
Drag racing is the heart and soul of American motorsport. In fact, if you've ever seen the first "Fast and Furious," then you'll know that a 10-second car is everything. For power addicted car enthusiasts, the pursuit of the 10-second 1/4 mile pass is their Mount Everest. In Chrysler's most badass video of the Hellcat Challenger yet, the latest factory-beast has been brought to a dragstrip.
“With the new Challenger SRT Hellcat, we’re reaching deep into our history and bringing back the notion from the muscle car era of the street and strip dual-purpose car," said Dodge President and CEO Tim Kuniskis. "Not only can Challenger run 10s on the drag strip, but you can also fit your family and drive cross country. This new 2015 Dodge Challenger is the ultimate GT muscle car.”
Fitted with drag radials, the Hellcat Challenger is capable of an incredible 10.8 second pass at 126 mph. That's great and all, but Hoosiers aren't street legal, so obviously we are slightly hesitant to respect the figures.. How will the Hellcat Challenger perform when it's on the stock Pirelli P Zero tires? Apparently, Chrysler reports that it's near as makes no difference at 11.2 seconds at 125 mph.
How does that figure measure up with the Shelby GT500? According to Motor Trend, the stock 2013 Shelby GT500 is capable of passing a 1/4 miile in just 11.6 seconds at 125.7 mph. It's a narrow victory, but a win is a win. Kudos, Dodge. You've created a real monster.
