Hector Sanabria of Club Deportivo Laferrere collapsed in the 29th minute of play during a third-division soccer club match Tuesday in Argentina. He died of a heart attack during the game just one day before his 28th birthday. Sanabria received medical attention while on the field, but was dead on arrival at the nearby hospital where he was transported. The match, which his club played against General Lamadrid in the Primera C, was canceled after he collapsed on the field.
News of his death spread quickly after he arrived to the hospital. The referee who suspended the match, Hernan Mastrangelo, told reporters that he was not near other players before he collapsed, and it did not appear that he was a part of anything that could have contributed to the cause of the heart attack. "He had no history of heart trouble," coach Eduardo Caceres told Radio La Red. "We did all the exams and medical controls. You see these things happen from a distance but never think they can happen to you." The Argentine Football Federation said that all of its weekend games will begin with a minute of silence in memory of Sanabria.
