The HBO show "Enlightened" is officially a goner. The network has confirmed that the series will not be renewed for a third season due to bad ratings.

The critically acclaimed show about a self-destructive woman who undergoes a spiritual awakening did not reach the public as it was expected.

The show premiered on October 2011, and earned Laura Dern a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy Show, but that did not translate into a ratings success. Dern, who created the show with writer Mike White, is best known for her role in "Jurassic Park" and she recently starred in Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master."

But while ratings might not reflect it -- only 130,000 people watched the second to last episode -- the show did amass a very loyal group of fans, who have now started a Twitter campaign that the show transfers to an online platform.

Comedian Patton Oswalt, a vocal supporter of the show, called on his Twitter followers to bombard Netflix asking them to pick up the ball HBO dropped.

"Everyone tweet @netflix RIGHT NOW. Ask them to pick up ENLIGHTENED. Followers ... ASSEMBLE1 At my signal, unleash hell! #Enlightened," he tweeted.

Followers did indeed follow:

"Is there any chance of @netflix picking up #Enlightened? That would be a reason to subscribe, right there" said @owenweetch.

"There seems to be a movement afoot to get @netflix to pick up #Enlightened a la #arresteddevelopment ... Save Mike White!" @spooningblog tweeted.

"Arrested Development" was cancelled by Fox in 2006, but vocal fans complained for years. Impressed by the DVD sales, Netflix resurrected the show, which is bound to come later this year.

Netflix already had a major success in the show department with "House of Cards," created by David Fincher and starring Kevin Spacey.

Could "Enlightened" follow in the same steps?
